History
The historic building known as East Lodge Gate House was built in three stages, the first two slate covered buildings in the 1850s and 1880s while the last section was believed to have been built between 1919 and 1927. In the 1850s the lane at the side of the East Lodge was the original entrance to Torrens Park Estate which occupied most of the land now bounded by Muggs Hill Road, Blythwood Road, Price Avenue & the Mitcham Shopping Centre. Traditionally the East Lodge was the home of the estate's head gardener and has been owned by several notable South Australian families including Torrens, Hughes and Barr Smith.
